State Superintendent Randy Dorn announced eight state-level finalists Oct. 23 for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Danielle Maletta of Eastside Catholic School is one of the four finalists in the math category, and Skyline High School’s Gretel von Bargen is one of the four finalists in the science category.
To be considered for the Presidential Award, teachers must be nominated and complete a comprehensive application. A statewide committee of content-area experts and award-winning teachers selected the finalists during the summer.
“These eight amazing teachers are not only innovating in their own classrooms,” said Dorn in a statement, “they are also inspiring innovation in their colleagues.”
The eight state-level finalists are eligible to win awards from the National Science Foundation, which are typically announced each spring.
Additionally, state-level finalists are recognized by regional and state math and science associations, and they’re invited to several state-level events for award-winning educators.
